Q: What were some of your goals heading into your final collegiate season?
This year I had several goals entering my final college season. My biggest goal was to do everything that I could to be the leader and player my team needed in order to go 15-0 and win the NAIA National Championship. Unfortunately, it didn’t go that way, but we still had an undefeated regular season and went 11-1 while losing in the Quarterfinals of playoffs. We also ended the season as Conference Champs and swept the conference, which was another one of my goals going into the season. Last year, I felt like I was overlooked in the NAIA, so this year I made it my goal to be known and establish that I should be first team All-Conference and NAIA All-American. I made first team All-Conference and we are still waiting on the All-American team to be released which will not be until after the NAIA National Championship. This season, I really wanted to make a statement so I could get my name out there and gain more interest from some pro teams from the NFL and the CFL.
Q: If you could describe your style of play in 3 words, what would they be?
Aggressive, Relentless, Clutch.
Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?
I will be training and lifting at Underground Fitness back at home while working with my trainer David Tapscott. I will also be working on my footwork to better my mobility and perfect my craft with help from some former league players and one of my former track coaches. I will also travel to Miami, Orlando, and Boston in order to work with other former league players and well-known trainers to get a wider insight on more workouts to help perfect my craft and get me ready to go.
Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on or look for?
I look for everything. I watch tendencies from defensive players to see things like shifts in the D-line, Linebacker blitz schemes, Defensive Back’s shifting from coverages, etc. I watch for players who take plays off so that I can take advantage of that when I wear them down. I don’t just watch film of myself, I watch everyone at my position in order to see if there is anything I can do better or anything that I can do to help my teammates do better. When evaluating myself, I look at footwork, stance, speed off the ball, technique (blocking and route running), and everything really. I’m always looking for ways to get better and better my technique, so I like to watch film with one of my teammates sometimes in order to get constructive criticism from another person in order to not only have my opinion of my play.
Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?
At the Tight End position, I’m not as big as the other ones, but I don’t have any problem holding my ground, making my blocks, and driving defenders back because I’m still strong enough to do my job and open up the holes. Also, it is very hard for Linebackers to guard me because they can’t get hands on me and I am faster than most Tight Ends. At Wide Receiver, Defensive Back’s have a hard time getting hands on me and defending me because I can pretty much go up and get any ball that is thrown up whether I’m open or not.
Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
I feel like I can be elusive and get open on any route. I’m also more aggressive than most Receivers, so I can handle Defensive Backs a lot better when getting off the line and blocking too. I can also get open and go up and grab jump balls and be strong enough to hold on to the ball and bring it in. I am a very versatile player and that shows on offense and on special teams such as kickoff, punt, and punt return. With the ball in my hands in open space, a 1-on-1 tackle is not something that I will not accept so a team will have to bring multiple defenders to bring me down almost every time. I am also a very strong and vocal leader on and off the field. I was on the leadership council here in college, so I know how to handle leadership positions and lead not only with talking, but with actions, too. I will always push my teammates to go harder than they think they can and I want them to do the same for me. Challenges are nothing to me because I feel like I can accomplish and overcome anything thrown my way.
Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?
I am an athletic and relentless player with BIG TALENT and major abilities to go far and beyond what is expected out of an average league player. I feel like I am a great fit for any team who wants a go getter who is also talented enough to make the plays needed to win games and championships and help lead the team on and off the field while gaining experience from vets and still perfecting my craft at the same time. You give me my shot and the only thing that you will get out of that is me exceeding the expectations that are set for me.
