Leon Eggleston: 2020 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Leon Eggleston
School: Wayne State
Position: OLB
Height:  5’11″
Weight: 225

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

A team goal I wanted was to improve from going 2-9 to a winning record again. We accomplished that by going 8-3 my last season. Improving the record was because of the dedication from everyone and buying in to what we needed to do to be a dominant team. Another goal that I wanted to achieve all conference honors. I wanted the GLIAC to know who Leon Eggleston was and I feel that I left my mark on the conference by earning that honors and playing each game like it was my last.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

They would say I am a passionate, energetic leader. The game of football has been around me for so long and I just play each down like it is my last. I don’t want anyone to question my effort, so when I step onto the field I give my all because I love my teammates and the game so much.

Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?

I focus more on the tendencies that offensive lineman give. Whether it is their eyes, their stance, how they pull, their pass set. Learning those tendencies will help me put myself in a better position to make a play.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

I would say the film work that I do. Breaking down the film to different runs, passes, and situational downs add to my IQ of the game. I’m undersized in my position I understand that, but having an high IQ of the game and where plays can go puts me in a better position to make a play. Another thing I would say is knowing the playbook. At Wayne State I had to know all three linebacker spots just because of depth issues but not just at linebacker, learning my Defensive line stunts and safety fits helped me read things a lot clearer and react quicker because I already know where my help was at or where the D-line is fitting.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

My offseason plan is to train with Jim Kielbaso in Wixom, Michigan to prepare myself for pro days and or combines.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I would say the things I would bring to a team is character, energy, passion and love. Not just on the field, but these are things I bring off the field. I truly care for and love helping people that are less fortunate than the situation I am in either mentally, emotionally etc. I want to be the person anyone can lean on when they need help or encouragement. On the field this is what I pride myself on. Like I said before I give my all for my teammates. The passion and love I have drives me to give my all for the person next to me.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL or any other pro leagues?

The last thing I have to say is that I just want a opportunity. An opportunity to be practice squad, special teams, or playing on the defensive side of the ball. Each of those are equally important to the game of football and I just want to continue fight and show anyone and everyone the passion and love I have for the game.
