Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?
Coming into my final season, I wanted to come in and be the best teammate that I can possibly be. I wanted to mentor the younger guys on the team, on and off the field. I wanted to be a positive role model for the guys and to show them how to do things right. Not only when coaches are around, but behind closed doors as well.
Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?
I’m one of the hardest workers they have ever seen. I have great character, I’m relentless to the ball every single play. They also gave me a nickname called the “Technician”.
Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?
First and foremost, I break down the offensive lineman. I check out their tendencies. I pull out my notepad and write down what their strengths and weakness are, from left tackle, all the way across to right tackle. I check out the opponent’s body language to see how they react to certain things such as fatigue or how do they react when they get beat on a play. Do they pout about it for the rest of the night or do they recuperate and have short memory to line down the next play and play football. I study every single one of them. After that, I look at the QB and running backs that I’m going against for that week. I check out the receivers, and their route concepts for certain formations. I break down the film in segments. I look at the opponent’s top plays on p&10. Secondly, I look at what they like to on 3rd and long and who they like to go to. Furthermore, I check out 3rd and short, afterwards I look at their top plays in the red zone and goal line. After I’m done breaking down the film, I watch the film in game flow to get a complete feel for the game and to see how my opponents are under pressure, without pausing or stopping anything.
Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?
What separates me from other players is my attention to detail. From the steps I take, hand placement, and eye discipline. My overall football IQ and awareness. To be able to diagnose a play on the way to ball is what separates me from every guy at my position. All of those require a lot of mental focus during battle on the film. Attention to detail is everything in this game. It can win or lose you the game.
Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?
I will be heading down to Miami (my hometown) and train at Fit Speed where they will prepare me for pro day come March.
Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
I will bring you a guy that is versatile and can play both outside linebacker or defensive end. I can drop back in coverage and also rush the passer. I am aggressive at the point of attack. I have great range and length, I can get the edge set in any system, whether you want to put me at linebacker or defensive end. I have a high motor and I am relentless to the ball every snap.
Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?
First and foremost, I am a man of faith, devoted husband and father. I am a very smart football player. I am very competitive and play the game the way it’s suppose to be played. I learn and adjust to plays really quick. You will get a guy that’s a positive influence on the field and also in the locker room. I can come into an organization and get along with guys really well, playing at two different schools in my college career. I will go to the farthest extent to make sure I represent the organization really well.
