Name: Hayden Huttula
School: Michigan Technological University
Position: C
Height: 6-2
Weight: 290

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

At the onset of the season, my goal for our team was to win the conference, while my personal goals included earning All-GLIAC 1st team, and All American. My focus was on refining my footwork and hand positioning techniques, improving my overall skills, gaining additional knowledge of the offense, and demonstrating leadership to cultivate a cohesive O-Line. I was voted captain by my teammates, earned 1st team all GLIAC, named MTU Offensive Lineman of the year, and set the MTU school record for power clean at 365 lbs.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

I would be described as being smart, mentally tough, and communicative during practices and along the sideline. I overcome my physical size by having good footwork, being quick off the line, having the ability to move laterally, and refusing to back down. I demonstrate perseverance, endurance, toughness, and have a fierce work ethic. “Hayden is a leader on our offensive line, and a leader on our team,” said head coach Steve Olson. “As a captain on our team, he exemplifies what a student athlete is supposed to be. He is a role model for the younger players and a role model for youth who aspire to be successful in athletics and life. His hard work, attention to detail and determination help him to be successful on the field and in the classroom.”

Q: When you are studying film, what are the things you focus on to improve your game?

Initially, I evaluate my first step. This is critical in making a successful play. Next, I evaluate my hand and head placement. It’s key to be quick to my man, controlling and sustaining my blocks. I pay particular attention to my failed plays, dissecting the execution to determine what should have taken place. Honest, constructive criticism from my coaches is invaluable. When evaluating opponents, I note the tendencies of the defensive linemen and linebackers.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

Although talented, many players rely on their size to make the play. I am smart. I rely on being quick, widening my base to handle power, and having intuitive reactions to developing plays. I am a versatile player, with the skill to trap and move outside the pocket to block and get on the second-level defenders. I seek out advice and coaching with the ultimate goal of continual improvement.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I am training in Marquette, MI at Advantedge Training facility. Weight training, speed and agility drills, as well as refining hand, head, and footwork is emphasized. Preparation for Pro-Days involves training for the 40-yard, shuttles, vertical jump, broad jump, 225 bench press reps, etc. I am training with other athletes pursuing the NFL career path which challenges and motivates me to excel. In addition to the physical aspect, I’ve been reviewing game tapes, reaching out to past coaches and previous NFL players for insight and recommended steps. I also participated in the Tropical Bowl Scrimmage in Orlando, FL.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

Integrity, tenacity, dependability, and leading by example are fundamental characteristics that describe me both on and off of the field. Commitment to the team and putting the team above my personal agenda is my foundation. I strive to succeed and excel in every aspect of my life. Possessing great time management skills has allowed me to attain several accolades on the football field while graduating magna cum laude as an undergraduate, and earning a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering degree from Michigan Technological University.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL and any other pro leagues?

I am a smart, dynamic football athlete, exhibiting a strong work ethic, dedication, and undying determination. I have taken what others have construed as weaknesses and developed them into strengths. I have proven that skill can overcome size with a never say quit attitude. If given the opportunity, I will give 110% and prove to be an asset to your organization.
