Alex Atherton: 2023 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Alex Atherton
School: Waldorf University
Position: SS/OLB
Height: 5-9
Weight: 190

Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

The biggest goal I had for myself this season was to turn myself into a LB. With it being my first time ever playing the position I wanted to do my best to become as technically and fundamentally sound in all aspects of the LB position.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

They would say I’m a good guy to be around. I try to get people’s spirits up any day no matter how I am feeling. They would also say I am willing to do whatever is needed for the team. Blood, sweat, or tears- I’m willing to give it all for my team and those around me.

Q: When you are studying film, what are the things you focus on to improve your game?

I heavily focus on down and distance. Knowing what the team is most likely to do in any given situation. I want to know what plays they favor in any formation, whether they’ll be pass/run heavy if it’s 3rd down or its 1st and goal. I always try to know and see where the opposing team want to take the ball.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

I would say it’s my physicality. A lot of people like to downplay me because of my size, but I use to my advantage. I have a lower center of gravity so I can hold my own against bigger guys. It especially aids me in my tackling and my ability to bring someone to the ground. I don’t care how big somebody is- when I come down to hit, I bring them down.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I am going to try and get faster. I want to improve my sideline to sideline coverage. I also want to get overall stronger and more explosive. That will give me the extra “pop” when I come down from safety or fill a gap as an LB.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I’ll bring the option to be put at multiple spots on the field. My strength can give me leverage to be useful at multiple roles. Teams will also get the kind of player who won’t get in trouble off the field. I dedicated my time entirely to whatever it is I have my eyes on wt that moment, with no distractions in mind.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL and any other pro leagues?

All I can say to any team is to look at me beyond the paperwork. I don’t let what coaches see on paper define me as an athlete. Any team that picks me up will get someone that players with a chip on his shoulder and always something to prove.
