Name: AJ Daniels
School: Southwestern
Position: TE/WR
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 235
Q: What goals did you accomplish heading into your final collegiate season?
When I was getting recruited to Southwestern, they had just restarted their football program. By the time we left, our senior class wanted Southwestern to go from hoping to win to expecting to win. At the end of this season, our senior class became the first group to end their careers with a winning record. I felt like this was a sign of improvement that was a result of seniors that came before us, our class, and classes after us. Personally, I wanted to be the best leader possible, by serving my teammates. I was also able to make First Team All-Conference.
Q: What would your coaches say about the type of player you are?
They would say that I am a hard worker and that I can be depended on to do my 1/11th of a play. Whether that is blocking for a teammate, running a route to open up coverage for a teammate, or catching the ball.
Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?
You can’t run a play without knowing what the defense is doing, so I focus on how the opponent plays certain formations, down and distances, and personnel. When evaluating my own game, the first thing I was taught to look at are my steps. Regardless of the play type, your feet set up the rest of the play. After that, I look to make sure I have the correct alignment, assignment, and technique for the play.
Q: What separates you from the other players at your position?
My football IQ. I am a converted quarterback, so I still see defenses from that perspective. I have been blessed with dependable hands, but I am not just a pass catcher. Coming from a school that runs the triple option, I take pride and have skill as a blocker.
Q: How will you train and prepare this offseason for the draft or other pro opportunities?
I will be working at my school and at a local facility that has a pre-combine training program. I will also be doing position work daily.
Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
On the field, I am a flexible player. I am willing to do whatever is best for the team. In my career, I have played quarterback, tight end, wide receiver, and punter. I am more than willing to play any of those or learn another position. Off the field, you are getting someone that wants to use his football and his platform to bless other people. I want to use football to help people and bring glory to God.
Q: What is your final pitch or sell to NFL and other pro league scouts?
I am willing to do whatever it takes to make it to the next level. I’ve never been a stats guy, and I don’t care about getting attention. I am someone that will work, prepare, and put the team first.
