Name: Nicholas Wimmer
School: William & Mary
Q: What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?
Some goals that I set this season were to help my team win a conference championship and to help lead the younger lineman and get them to buy in to our program. We did not win the championship but I believe I helped lay a foundation for the younger guys and was able to help show them the right ways to do things in order to be successful in the classroom and on the field. By the end of the season, my position coach was referring to me as his assistant.
Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?
My coaches and teammates would say that I’m a perfectionist. That i take great pride in the amount of work that I put in to being the best at my craft. My coaches would say that they’ve seen me watching film the same day after a game was played and my teammates would say that I’m reliable in high-pressure situations.
Q: When you are studying film, what do you focus on to improve your game?
When I watch film I do so for multiple reasons. On my first run through the film I look at my technique/footwork/head and hand placement and whether my block was dominant and successful. I watch the guys beside of me and try to think of ways to work with them in order to make our double teams more successful. I look for tendencies and habits in myself but also in my opponents, for example how they read a down block vs. an outside zone block vs. a pass read and try to communicate that with my fellow lineman and coaches. I also watch film to understand how their schemes play against ours, I try to identify weaknesses in their previous games as well as I try to identify some of ours and how they might gameplan us. I try to understand what formations and concepts give them trouble and I try to communicate that with my teammates and coaches.
Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?
What separates me is my perseverance, grit, and football IQ. My ability to battle through injuries and stay dedicated through a coaching staff change shows that I’m committed to the cause by whatever means necessary. I’ve put in countless hours in the weight room and film room outside of the mandatory sessions. I’ve been around NFL players and I’ve seen what it takes to be successful and I know that I possess it.
Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?
My offseason and pandemic plan was to workout in preparation for my pro day but it was cancelled. Since then I have remained focused using my schools facilities and even creating some of my own equipment at my house using trees and some amateur carpentry skills. The pandemic created an opportunity for me to focus on training and be in the best physical shape i could possibly be in. I have also been consulting as well as working out with current NFL players.
Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?
On the field I believe I play with tenacity and calculated aggression. I am a technician who takes in joy in the physical nature of my position. Physically dominating on the field and then a student of the game off the field. I believe my presence in the locker room would motivate other players to be at their best and to focus their time and energy in to team related goals. I view myself as a leader and a person who likes to set the example for others to do the right things.
Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL/CFL or any other pro leagues?
My final pitch to the pro leagues are that I play with a fire under me, I play aggressively and I play the game understanding each and every persons job on the field. I have been a student of the game and as a center who has had to change protections as well as mike declared run schemes on the fly mid-game, I believe I have an understanding of schemes at a very high level. My goal every day walking in to the facility is to be the hardest worker in the room. This is my passion, I know I have the ability both mentally and physically, I’m healthy, and you’ll get my best every single day. All I need is a shot.
