Chris James: 2022 Pro Prospect Interview

Name: Chris James
School: University of Tennessee at Chattanooga
Position: TE/FB

Height: 6’3”
Weight: 235

What goals did you set and/or accomplish in your final collegiate season?

My main goal was to win the Southern Conference Championship. We unfortunately came up a little short and did not make the playoffs.

Q: How do you think you took advantage of the extra year of eligibility to increase your chances of going pro?

The extra year was a blessing in disguise for me. I had previously only played TE for 1 year before the Covid season. Before that I was playing QB. So getting to come back for an entire extra year allowed me to grow as a player and really understand how to play the position at a high level.

Q: What would your coaches and teammates say about the type of player you are?

I think my team would say I was someone that gave everything I had to the program. My passion for the game and my passion to not only be the best I could be but to make my teammates the best players they could be really put me in a position to be successful while at UTC. I believe words like gritty, leader, and relentless would describe me.

Q: When you are studying film, what are the things you focus on to improve your game?

First thing I look at is always effort. If I have even a doubt that I didn’t go 110% on every play I’m disappointed. Route running was something I really focused in on this year and watched a lot of film on. Watching the film and learning how to set defenders up or how to get open vs different coverages was a big vocal point during film sessions.

Q: What separates you from the other pro prospects at your position?

My versatility. I was asked to play a lot of different roles during my time at UTC. I did a lot of everything. I caught balls split out. I blocked really well in line and from the backfield. There wasn’t a ton of guys in the country that could do everything I did, as well as I did.

Q: What is your offseason plan to train and prepare for professional opportunities?

I am currently training at APEC for my pro day (March 31). After pro day I hope to continue training with APEC to prepare for my rookie season.

Q: What kind of strengths and abilities will you bring to a team that will stand out both on and off the field?

I think one of my biggest strengths is leadership. I was a captain during the 2021 season and I think it does help me on the field, but also in every day life.

Q: What is your final pitch to the NFL and any other pro leagues?

Any NFL team that takes me is getting a blue collar/lunch pail guy. Someone who is going to come to work day in and day out, and give everything for an organization. I believe I am a “sleeper” in this years draft. I have been through so much adversity throughout my football career and I’ve made it this far. I’m excited to see what happens next.
